Reflection of November 2020 Chapter Meeting

The theme for our last meeting was Mental Health, coinciding with the Stress Awareness Day that is held every first Wednesday of November.

Like every other meeting we had before, we started with an introduction from each Toastmaster. This time we have our newest member Nur Farahin, as well as our guests, Chan Sue Ming, EC 2 from Nee Soon East Toastmasters Club, and Srinivasan Sohien Kasinathan, ACB/ALB from Whampoa Toastmasters Club. Afterward, the meeting finally started.

Our Toastmaster of the day, Matthew Leung, set up a trivia quiz Kahoot game revolving around mental health. It served to dispel some of the misconceptions and stereotypes people have when it comes to the issue of mental health and its discussion. This is followed by an opening speech by Club President Monica Tiffany, where she talked about the people who are mentally affected by the current COVID - 19 situation. She noted that while she could cope well being inside for a long time, there are people who couldn't and are ailed by depression and/or anxiety, among other things.

The Special Segment of this chapter meeting came next. Led by Ho Yen Yuen, DTM as the speaker, she gave a presentation for our Mini Talks Workshop series, titled "Financial Planning, Part 1: Personal Finance". She shared essential information that people would need to know to start in managing their monthly finances. Once her presentation ended, it is time for the project speeches.

The first speaker was Lee Choo, EC 5. She finished the Effective Coaching pathway, and now she started a new pathway, Engaging Humor. Her speech was about the importance of humor in life, with a funny little anecdote about a classmate of hers. The second speaker was Farah with her maiden speech, where she detailed the journey of her careers and how she found her calling in wanting to help people through coaching. Andri was the third speaker, and he finally finished his first level in the Dynamic Leadership pathway. He presented a speech about mastery.

Wei Xing, LD 1 spoke after him, starting the level 2 of her pathway, Leadership Development. In her speech, she talked about her struggles with procrastination and how she tried to get out of the habit of putting off doing things she didn't like. Last but not least, Sebastian, SR 1 came next. He spoke of the culture he was raised in and how it helped shape his relationship with other cultures.

The table topics segment of the night was a unique one. Boon Lan, ACS was the Table Topic Master for the night. She set up a series of pictures and the speakers would choose one of them. They were given 3 options; they could give their own interpretation, create a story, or set up 5W + 1H based their chosen images. It was the first time that we had a table topics segment without the topics involving any words, a refreshing take on the program.

At the end of the night, the winners of the three categories of the chapter meeting were:

  • Best Speaker: Andri Hartanto Kristian, DL 1

  • Best Table Topics: Andri Hartanto Kristian, DL 1

  • Best Evaluator: Srinivasan Sohien Kasinathan, ACB/ALB and Chan Sue Ming, EC 2

We congratulate all the winners, and we hope the others can get motivated to strive for improvement in the future!
